Full Moon In Cancer, January 1-2, 2018

Happy New Year, my magickal beings!

2018 is here and quite frankly it feels as if we all just crossed a hard won finish line. What’s interesting is that this demarcation of the new year is a contrived one that isn’t really tied to the cycles of the universe in a natural way, but then… maybe it is.

Whether you mark Hallows as your new year or Winter Solstice, the reality is that all of these holidays are close to one another and they come to us in a series. We have been closing down last year for the better part of 3 months now, but now we have a change in calendar, in year. We join the rest of the world in this newness that comes with a new number and that holds a since of magick all it’s own.

Full Moon In Cancer

But here we are… new year, first day and we are blessed with a ripe Full Moon. She is full of herself in the most beautiful way. Sitting squarely in Her own sign, the Moon in Cancer is all water, all emotion, all intuition. She is the nourishing, nurturing Mother that comes now at this time where we have been retreated into the Dream Time, and she starts to nurse us back into the strength and beauty needed to reemerge.

We need this energy now. We need this love and nurturing now. And this is true in the context of our yearly cycles of birth, growth, blossom and retreat, as well as in the context of starting a new year after what many feel has been a very trying one.

The energetic of this Moon can surface so many feelings that remain from unfinished business in our past, but this Watery space also opens us up, creates the needed vulnerability to be nurtured and loved, held and fed. This is the beauty of this Moon. And in this process also exists the opportunity to really dive deep into what you Need in order to be cared for and nourished as you embark on this new year.

Here’s something really important to know and remember: Full Moon always come with a balancing Sun Sign. The Sun is in Capricorn, the earth, the Father… the stabilizing ground to stand on. This is an opportunity for us to be in our matured spiritual selves. This is a chance to allow for all those emotions to come up, to reveal themselves in whatever intensity is truth for them while also standing firm on the Earth, keeping ground and observing that which is coming up for you rather than be tossed in an ocean of emotional waves.

This is how we practice our spiritual maturity – allowing both to exist at once. This practice allows us to see, acknowledge and then, like that wise Mother, tend to the wounds and the needs of the heart/soul/child and give that deeper nourishment needed. From this source is where self care truly comes from.

Self Care Isn’t Just A Fad

This sign is also associated with the Tarot card, The Chariot. The Charioteer wears the protective layer of the Moon, the Mother, standing in observation, plotting a course to begin moving forward. There is consciousness of choice in this card. And it pairs very well with this Moon.

Before we move on with this new year, what do you need? What will help sustain you in order for you to do the work that lies before you?

This is more than hot baths and soft socks, though those things are certainly lovely and can help us feel cared for.

The type of nurturing and care that this Moon calls for is about the sustenance that sources your movement, your thriving, and because ultimately, this is care you will be giving to yourself, it can and will take on a much deeper psychological impact and quality.

So questions to explore this Full Moon are:

  • What do you need to say ‘no’ to in order to feel free and safe to proceed forward?
  • What helps keep your physical and mental energy on and up while you engage your day to day life, both at home and at work?
  • What gives you true abiding pleasure that connects you to gratitude and joy in life?
  • What kind of support do you need in order to show up to your responsibilities and manage them in a loving and generous manner?

What is the caliber and depth of the self care you are needing for this year?

All of these questions have the potential to bring up emotions, but call on Capricorn to also help you sit far enough back that you can observe them, name them, claim them and hold them to your heart like a Mother would.

Moon Magick

There are many options for what you could do with a Full Moon In Cancer Water. Using the water to add to a hot bath comes to mind. Using it to create for yourself a healing and nourishing dish that symbolized the care you will give your body is another idea.

Adding it to a chamomile and vanilla infusion to drink before bed or to use as an anointing potion is also a great use of this water. And another lovely thing to do is use this water to anoint and charge all your other Moon Water bottles to give them an extra touch of Moon with the intention that each Water bottle and collection be deeply tied to the most loving and nurturing aspects of the Moon always.
